Pope John Paul II meets with the man who tried to assassinate him, 1983
On Wednesday, May 13, 1981, Mehmet Ali Agca brandished a gun and shot Pope John Paul II four times in the abdomen in a St Peter's Square parade in Vatican City. Despite being critically wounded, he recovered and forgave Ali Agca, saying, "pray for my brother…whom I have sincerely forgiven".
The Pope went to his cell and spoke to him for 21 minutes, starting the conversation with "Do you speak Italian?" to which Agca nodded. They spoke out of earshot. After the conversation ended, the Pope gave him a small white box that contained a silver and mother-of-pearl rosary.
In 2000 Agca was pardoned by the Pope's request to president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
While in prison in 2007, Agca converted to Christianity and left flowers on Pope John Paul II's tomb in 2014.
