A sheep showing gratitude to the dog that saved him from a wolf attack.
Back in 2019, somewhere in the Caucasus Mountains a heroic shepherd dog protected its flock against a pack of wolves. After the dog chased the wolves away, a sheep was seen comforting their savior, and the picture of the touching scene has since gone viral. The blood on the dog is very likely the wolf’s. Guessing this is Turkey or the Balkens where dogs like this have been wearing spiked collars and protecting mountain flocks for hundreds of years. Dogs are highly valued by shepherding people. Peanut gallery comments come from modern people with no field knowledge. Here is the story: An incident happened in 2019, somewhere in the Caucasus Mountains, a pack of wolves Aᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ ed a flock of sheep. Fortunately, a heroic shepherd dog protected them against sharp claws. The dog in question is a Kangal, a breed of dog that originated in Turkey and is mainly found in Central Asia. The breed is quite rare in the United States because of Turkish export restrictions to preserve the breed’s pedigree. They are often tasked with guarding and protecting free-grazing herds in mountainous terrain where there are many ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀs (especially wolves). During work, the dog and the sheep also have a certain connection, it not only herds the sheep but also ʟɪᴠᴇs with them. This might explain why sheep care so much about their guardians. In the picture, we see that a sheep is interested in asking the dog, the hero just chased the wolves away. These Kangal dogs can grow up to 85 cm tall and weigh up to 65 kg. Despite their large size and muscular body, they have an excellent speed, making them highly effective against ᴘʀᴇᴅᴀᴛᴏʀs. Because of living in a hostile environment, Kangal has developed many powerful traits. They are extremely brave and strong-willed, with a very high ꜰɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ spirit, sometimes defending their flock even at the cost of their ʟɪᴠᴇs. The equipped dog wears a collar with spikes, this helps protect the dog when ꜰɪɢʜᴛɪɴɢ against predators. Although they often encounter enemies, they are very calm and gentle with children. This is because the Kangal considers the humans it ʟɪᴠᴇs with as part of its pack, and their instincts will tell them not to be aggressive or hostile around us. So, these Turkish shepherd dogs are exceptionally loyal and devoted to their owners, and they also protect what’s important to them. When properly trained, Kangals are smart enough to know when to calm down, ᴛʜʀᴇᴀᴛᴇɴ an enemy, or Aᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ a predator, a remarkable trait.
